Accepting Scalapay as a merchant

Scalapay is an Italian buy now, pay later provider founded in 2019. Its payment services are provided by Scalapay IP S.p.A., an Italian payment institution supervised by the Bank of Italy. The shopper pays in three or four monthly instalments, or later in one amount, and Scalapay pays the merchant the full order value. It is offered to shoppers in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Finland. For a merchant the fee is the subject, and Scalapay is unusual in printing the ceiling of it.

How to accept Scalapay as a merchant

You can contract Scalapay directly and connect it through one of its plugins, among them Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop, Shopware, Salesforce and SAP Hybris. Through a payment orchestrator such as Ixopay or ProcessOut you still need a signed contract with Scalapay. Or you take it through a PSP that carries it, such as Stripe, Adyen or PayPal.

Since July 2026 Scalapay states that it is automatically available at checkout for eligible Stripe merchants in supported markets and categories. That sentence deserves a second reading. A deferred payment method with a fee several times that of a card can now appear in a checkout without anyone having negotiated it.

Model

Scalapay sells the instalment plan, and you pay for it

Scalapay's terms state that it pays the merchant the total cost of the product, and the shopper then repays Scalapay. Scalapay's developer documentation describes a daily bank transfer of the orders received in the previous 24 hours, available on the merchant's account within about five business days, with refunds from that period deducted.

So the fee buys three things: the shopper's interest-free credit, the transfer of the repayment risk away from you, and the reach of a brand shoppers in Italy and France already use to split a purchase. None of these is payment processing, so a comparison with a card rate tells you little. The comparison that counts is the margin on orders Scalapay brings in that you would not otherwise have had.

Where Scalapay works, online and in store

Scalapay's developer documentation lists Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain as authorised countries, together with the French overseas departments, and the euro as the only currency. PSPs publish narrower lists for their own route: Adyen lists France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

In store Scalapay works in two ways. The shopper generates a barcode in the Scalapay app, which the cashier scans or types into Scalapay's Partner Portal, or shop staff create the order in the portal and send the shopper a payment link that is valid for ten minutes. Both turn an instalment purchase into a counter transaction, and both run outside your terminal estate, so they need their own reconciliation.

Pricing

The information sheet prints the ceiling: 10% plus 1 euro

Scalapay IP publishes a merchant information sheet, version 8 of 15 June 2026. It states that the maximum variable fee is 10% of the total product cost and the maximum fixed fee 1.00 euro per transaction. The actual rate is set in the activation agreement and is not published.

Through a PSP the rate is printed. Stripe publishes 4.99% plus 0.35 euro for Scalapay in the euro countries. PayPal publishes 5.49% plus 0.35 euro. Adyen prices by shopper country: in Italy 0.11 euro plus 3.99% plus 0.20 euro. On a 150 euro order that is 7.84 euro at Stripe, 8.94 euro at PayPal and 6.30 euro at Adyen for an Italian shopper, against a ceiling of 16.00 euro.

These are published list prices and the comparison is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay. What the ceiling gives you is a fixed point in a negotiation that usually has none. A merchant that knows the maximum, and knows what three PSPs print, is not negotiating against a blank page.

Mix

A method that switches itself on changes your payment mix

If a share of the shoppers who would have paid by card now choose Scalapay, each of those euros moves from a card rate to a deferred payment rate. Take 5 million euro of online turnover in Italy, an average order of 150 euro, and 4% of that turnover moving to Scalapay. At Stripe's published rate those 1,333 orders cost about 10,400 euro a year. At an illustrative card rate of 1.5% plus 0.25 euro they would have cost about 3,300 euro.

The difference of about 7,100 euro a year is the price of the method unless it brings orders you would not otherwise have had. That is measurable, and it should be measured before the method is left on by default: compare conversion and order value for comparable traffic with and without Scalapay shown, and decide on the figures.

Regulation

The terms keep the product outside credit rules because it is short and interest-free

Scalapay's Italian terms place the pay in three and pay in four product outside the consumer credit chapter of the Italian Banking Act, on the ground that no interest is charged and the credit is short. Its pay in 6, 9 or 12 product is already presented as consumer credit, with a credit bureau check.

Directive (EU) 2023/2225 applies from 20 November 2026, and the exemption for credit repayable within a short period at insignificant cost disappears with it. Your provider carries the licence; you carry the declines. Ask Scalapay in writing what it expects to change in its acceptance, and what your contract says when it does.

Returns run through an open instalment plan

Scalapay states that returns and refunds are handled by the merchant. A full refund returns the instalments already paid and cancels the ones still open; a partial refund reduces the open instalments first. The shopper sees a plan that shrinks rather than a refund arriving, which is a different customer service conversation from a card refund.

Disputes depend on the route. Stripe documents that a shopper can open a Scalapay dispute within 210 calendar days and that Scalapay decides within 30 days; Adyen lists chargebacks as not supported. Put the dispute window and who decides into the contract, for the route you actually use.

Which payment providers support Scalapay

In the index, Adyen, PayPal, Payplug and Stripe offer Scalapay to merchants established in Europe. You can also contract Scalapay directly, and through an orchestrator a direct contract is required.

The questions to put to each are the same: the rate against the published ceiling, whether the method is switched on by default, how the payout is timed, how a partial refund is settled, and who decides a dispute.

Reviewing what Scalapay costs you

What you pay for Scalapay is set in your agreement, not by a scheme. Start by establishing whether you are overpaying your PSP, and if Scalapay carries a material share of your Italian or French volume, set its rate against the ceiling before you renew.
