Accepting FLOA Pay as a merchant

FLOA Pay is the instalment product of FLOA, a French credit institution based in Bordeaux and a wholly owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas, whose group it joined in February 2022. The shopper pays in three or four instalments, in one amount 30 days later, or in 10 to 48 monthly instalments as consumer credit. FLOA takes the credit decision and the risk of non-payment. It is live for shoppers in France, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Portugal. For a merchant one choice sets the price: whether the shopper pays fees for the plan, or you do.

How to accept FLOA Pay as a merchant

You can contract FLOA directly, as a FLOA Pay merchant, and connect it through its API, or take it through a PSP that carries it. The routes differ in who holds the commercial terms. Computop asks for your own FLOA Pay merchant account and the credentials from the FLOA back end, so the rate is agreed between you and FLOA. Pay. activates FLOA in its own admin panel, and PayPal prints FLOA Pay in its fee tables, so there the price is the PSP's.

That makes the first question a structural one. With your own FLOA account you negotiate with the credit provider. Through a PSP that resells it, you negotiate with the PSP, at a list price that already contains FLOA's share.

Credit

FLOA lends to the shopper and pays you the order value

FLOA's French terms for deferred payment and payment in three or four instalments describe each plan as a credit operation by FLOA as a credit institution. The instalments are debited from the payment account behind the shopper's Visa or Mastercard, and the time between the first and the last instalment is at most three months. Computop documents that after a credit check FLOA assumes the shopper's entire default risk, and that the merchant receives the full amount after capture. A payment fails when FLOA does not accept the credit application.

The terms place the three month plans outside the consumer credit articles L.312-1 to L.312-94 of the French Consumer Code, because repayment takes no more than three months and the fees are negligible. The 10 to 48 month plans are tied consumer credit, with supporting documents and acceptance after the legal withdrawal period. Directive (EU) 2023/2225 applies from 20 November 2026 and states that buy now, pay later should be included in its scope.

Where FLOA Pay is used, online and in store

FLOA states that one instalment solution covers France, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Portugal. It sets basket ranges per product: 50 to 6,000 euro for three and four instalments, 200 to 75,000 euro for 10 to 48 instalments, and 30 to 1,000 euro for payment 30 days later. FLOA states that it has more than 4 million customers.

In store the shopper pays in instalments on the spot, according to FLOA. The French terms reserve the three month plans for adults resident in France with a Visa or Mastercard in their own name, so eligibility is set per country by FLOA's own terms, not by your checkout.

Pricing

FLOA publishes no merchant rate, PayPal publishes two

FLOA's merchant site gives no rate. Through a PSP the rate is printed. PayPal publishes 5.49% plus 0.35 euro for FLOA Pay when the plan is interest-bearing for the consumer, and 6.50% plus 0.35 euro when it is interest-free for the consumer. Pay. publishes 5.54% plus 0.15 euro for France, Italy, Spain and Portugal and 5.21% plus 0.15 euro for Belgium on its Professional plan of 35 euro a month.

On a 300 euro order that is 16.82 euro at PayPal when the shopper pays the fees, 19.85 euro when the shopper pays nothing, and 16.77 euro at Pay. for a French shopper. These are published list prices and the comparison is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay.

Fees

A plan without shopper fees carries a higher merchant rate

FLOA's terms run each short plan in two versions: with negligible fees charged to the shopper, or without fees at an APR of 0%. PayPal's two rates show what the second version costs the merchant. Take 3 million euro of FLOA volume in France at an average order of 300 euro, so 10,000 orders a year. At 5.49% plus 0.35 euro they cost 168,200 euro, at 6.50% plus 0.35 euro they cost 198,500 euro.

The difference of 30,300 euro a year is the price of offering the plan without fees. At an illustrative gross margin of 30%, the version without fees has to bring in 101,000 euro of extra turnover, about 337 additional orders of 300 euro, before it pays for itself. Below that it is a discount given at checkout, and it should be set per product and per basket, not once for the whole range.

Marketing

Your FLOA marketing is approved by FLOA, and the fee version changes the wording

FLOA's advertising guide for Belgium, version 02.2026, states that every communication mentioning FLOA must be submitted to its marketing team for validation. The legal text on a banner differs depending on whether the shopper pays fees. A switch from the version with fees to the version without fees therefore changes your price and your marketing text at the same time.

Put three things in writing: which fee version applies to which product and basket range, how long FLOA takes to approve a campaign, and who carries the cost when a campaign runs with the wrong legal text.

The products you get depend on the route

FLOA sells three and four instalments, 10 to 48 monthly instalments and payment 30 days later. A PSP does not necessarily carry all of them. Pay. documents three or four instalments and payment within 30 days. Computop's developer documentation lists 3X, 4X, 1XD and 3XD, the last two being deferred plans. BNP Paribas's own Axepta documentation states that only Floa 3X and Floa 4X are available. None of the three names the 10 to 48 month credit there.

A merchant with high baskets who wants the 10 to 48 month credit at checkout needs a route that carries it, and the PSP with the lowest printed rate may be the one without it. Check the product list per route before comparing rates, because a rate for three instalments says nothing about the long credit.

Which payment providers support FLOA Pay

In the index, Computop, Eupago, Lyra, Pay. and PayPal offer FLOA Pay to merchants established in Europe. You can also contract FLOA directly, and through Computop your own FLOA Pay merchant account is required.

The questions to put to each are the same: the rate for the version with and without shopper fees, which FLOA products the route carries, when the order value reaches your account, how a partial refund is settled, and how campaign approval by FLOA is handled.

Reviewing what FLOA Pay costs you

What you pay for FLOA Pay is set in your agreement, not by a scheme. Start by establishing whether you are overpaying your PSP, and if FLOA Pay carries a material share of your French or Belgian volume, set the cost of the version without fees against the orders it brings before you renew.
