Accepting BANCOMAT Pay as a merchant

BANCOMAT Pay is the mobile payment network of BANCOMAT S.p.A., the Italian company behind the BANCOMAT and PagoBANCOMAT circuits, launched in 2019. The shopper's mobile phone number is linked to their current account. Online they enter that number at checkout and confirm the payment with a notification on their smartphone, in store they scan a QR code on the POS terminal, and the amount is debited directly from the account. For a merchant the useful part is that BANCOMAT Pay is priced as an Italian circuit, and an Italian acquirer such as UniCredit prints in its information sheets how much of the price goes to interchange and the circuit and how much it keeps.

How to accept BANCOMAT Pay as a merchant

BANCOMAT S.p.A. does not sign merchants itself. Its own business page tells an online merchant to contact its bank to integrate BANCOMAT Pay, so acceptance runs through an acquiring bank or a PSP. Online that is a redirect or a phone number field at checkout. In store the cashier selects BANCOMAT Pay in the POS menu and the terminal shows a dynamic QR code for the shopper to scan.

There is therefore no direct price to compare against. What you pay is the rate of the bank or PSP that carries the method, and the published rates sit far apart, as the pricing section below shows.

Rails

BANCOMAT Pay is a domestic scheme that debits the current account

A BANCOMAT Pay payment is drawn directly from the shopper's current account, with no prefunded balance and no card number entered. The shopper authorises it in the BANCOMAT app or in a participating bank's own app. Intesa Sanpaolo's e-commerce guide states that BANCOMAT Pay takings are made available to the merchant immediately.

Because it is a scheme, BANCOMAT Pay carries an interchange fee, which Italian acquirers call MIF, and a scheme fee, both inside the acquirer's price. PSP documentation lists refunds, partial refunds and disputes as supported, with a refund window of 12 months at PPRO and 365 days at Antom.

Where BANCOMAT Pay is used, and where it is sold

The shopper side is Italy. PPRO and Antom both list Italy as the only consumer country and the euro as the only currency. BANCOMAT names Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Greece only for sending money to friends, not for paying a merchant. The service is already active in the banking apps of Intesa Sanpaolo, Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking, isybank and UniCredit, and other shoppers activate it in the BANCOMAT app.

The merchant side is wider. In the index Mollie offers BANCOMAT Pay to merchants established in 24 European countries, and Antom to merchant entities in the EEA, the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore and Hong Kong. A merchant outside Italy can therefore accept it, and the volume it brings depends on the share of Italian shoppers in your checkout.

Pricing

BANCOMAT Pay has no list price, only the price of your provider

BANCOMAT S.p.A. publishes no merchant tariff for BANCOMAT Pay. The providers in the index do. Mollie publishes 1.50% plus 0.25 euro. Viva.com publishes 0.40% plus 0.50 euro in Italy for payments of 5 euro or more, with a monthly e-commerce plan. Pay. publishes 1.95% plus 0.10 euro on its Professional plan. UniCredit publishes 1.75% for online payments, and Numia's information sheet prints 6% plus 1 euro with a monthly minimum commission of 200 euro for the national circuit.

On a 30 euro order that is 0.70 euro at Mollie, 0.62 euro at Viva.com, 0.69 euro at Pay. and 0.53 euro at UniCredit, before the plan fees and the 0.10 euro per transaction UniCredit's sheet also prints. At Numia's printed rate the same order costs 2.80 euro.

These are published list prices and the comparison is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay. What the comparison shows is that the method does not set the price. The provider does, and the same 30 euro order costs between 0.53 euro and 2.80 euro depending on whose rate applies.

Margin

The information sheet shows which part of the price is negotiable

UniCredit's information sheet for e-commerce acquiring does more than print 1.75%. It states that the price contains an interchange fee of 0.20% and a scheme fee of 0.05%. UniCredit's in-store sheet shows 0.10% interchange and 0.08% scheme fee in the same way. Everything above those two components is the acquirer's own margin.

On 1 million euro of online BANCOMAT Pay volume at 1.75%, the price is 17,500 euro a year. Interchange accounts for 2,000 euro and the scheme fee for 500 euro. The remaining 15,000 euro is what UniCredit keeps, and it is the only part a negotiation can move. The example is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay. Ask your acquirer for the same split in writing, and negotiate the margin, not the total.

Contract

One IBAN per VAT number decides how you reconcile

Intesa Sanpaolo's merchant guides state that BANCOMAT Pay can be linked to only one IBAN per VAT number, and that the commission is debited from the same account the takings are credited to. Several webshops or store groups under one VAT number therefore settle into one account, with fees and takings mixed in the same flow.

That is an operational point with a cost in finance time. Ask your acquirer in writing whether the same rule applies on its route, whether fees are netted or debited separately, and which reference in the settlement report identifies the shop or point of sale. Without that reference, reconciliation of BANCOMAT Pay per shop is manual work.

BANCOMAT Pay covers one-off payments, within limits set by the shopper's bank

PPRO and Antom both list recurring payments as not supported, and Antom also lists tokenised payments as not supported. On those routes BANCOMAT Pay therefore carries no subscription and no stored credential. PPRO lists the maximum amount as varying by bank, so a large basket can fail on the shopper's own bank limit rather than on any risk rule of yours.

Both points are reasons to keep a card or another method next to it in the checkout. For a subscription, offer BANCOMAT Pay for the first payment only if a second method takes over the renewals.

Which payment providers support BANCOMAT Pay

In the index, Antom (Ant International), Axerve, Mollie, Numia, Pay., UniCredit and Viva.com offer BANCOMAT Pay to merchants. Italian merchants can also activate it through the acquiring service of their own bank.

The questions to put to each are the same: the rate and how it splits into interchange, scheme fee and margin, any monthly minimum or plan fee, how settlement and fees are booked per shop, and the refund window on that route.

7 providers in the index offer BANCOMAT Pay to merchants established in Europe, and 6 of them publish a price.

Reviewing what BANCOMAT Pay costs you

What you pay for BANCOMAT Pay is set in your agreement with your acquirer or PSP, not by the scheme. Start by establishing whether you are overpaying your PSP, and where BANCOMAT Pay is a material share of your Italian volume, ask for the interchange and scheme fee split before you renew.
