Accepting Alma as a merchant
Alma is a French buy now, pay later provider. Alma SAS, based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, is licensed in France by the ACPR as both a payment institution and a financing company. The shopper pays in 2, 3 or 4 instalments, or later, and Alma pays the merchant in full whether the shopper honours the repayments or not. Alma offers its products in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Portugal, and states that it is trusted by 26,000 merchants. For a merchant the point is that Alma has no single price. Every instalment plan carries its own rate, and the shopper chooses the plan.
Published prices for AlmaPer provider, country and channel, further down this pageGo to the pricesHow to accept Alma as a merchant
You can contract Alma directly. Alma activates the account once the identity of the company and its legal representatives has been verified, and you connect it through a plugin or the API, online and in store. Or you take it through a PSP that carries it, such as Stripe, Mollie or Adyen.
Some PSPs only carry the connection. Lyra and Pay. publish their own fee for Alma, with the cost of Alma itself on top: Lyra names a direct contract with Alma, and Pay. lists the costs of Alma next to its own fee. On those routes your price for one payment method sits in two places.
Model
Alma lends to the shopper and takes the repayment risk
The shopper pays by card, CB, Visa or Mastercard, and repays Alma directly. Alma pays you the full amount minus its fee, and late payments carry no extra cost for you. Alma's pricing page states that you are paid in full whether your customer honours the payments or not. When it judges a risk of fraud or default, Alma may refuse the transaction at its own discretion.
Alma's developer documentation gives the transfer delay to a direct merchant as usually one or seven days. Through Stripe the payout timing is T+3. Stripe also documents that Alma may occasionally charge the shopper more in the first instalment, based on purchasing power and other credit factors, so the plan the shopper sees is not always an equal split.
Disputes run through Alma, not through a card scheme. Stripe documents a window of 120 calendar days for the shopper, 14 days for your evidence and a decision by Alma within 25 days. Adyen lists chargebacks as not supported for Alma.
Where Alma is offered, online and in store
Alma lists eight countries. PSPs publish shorter lists for their own route: Stripe accepts Alma for business locations in Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Spain, in euro only, and Adyen lists France. Alma shows instalments by default for baskets between 50 and 2,000 euro, and you can change the minimum in your account; Stripe states a range of 50 to 5,000 euro.
In store Alma works in two ways. Staff generate a payment link in a POS interface that is sent to the shopper by SMS, or the payment runs on an Adyen terminal, the V400M or P400Plus, for 2, 3 or 4 instalments. On the terminal route, Alma's documentation states that you reconcile Adyen's settlement report with your Alma export, so the instalment sale needs its own reconciliation step.
Pricing
Alma publishes some of its rates, PSPs publish one rate per plan
Alma's pricing page prints 3.60% excluding VAT for payment in 2 instalments and 4.20% excluding VAT for payment 15 days later, with no set-up or monthly fee up to 1 million euro of turnover. Above that the offer is individual, with rates that decrease with volume. The page states that rates may be adjusted according to the risk identified.
Through a PSP the rate depends on the plan. Stripe publishes 3.90%, 4.50% and 5.85% plus 0.30 euro for 2, 3 and 4 instalments. Mollie publishes from 4.50% plus 0.35 euro for 3 instalments and from 5.50% plus 0.35 euro for 4 instalments in France. Adyen publishes 0.11 euro plus 3.99% for 3 instalments and 0.11 euro plus 4.70% for 4 instalments in France.
On a 300 euro order in 3 instalments that is 13.80 euro at Stripe, from 13.85 euro at Mollie and 12.08 euro at Adyen. The same order in 4 instalments costs 17.85 euro at Stripe. Alma's own rate for 2 instalments comes to 10.80 euro excluding VAT. These are published list prices and the comparison is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay.
Instalments
The shopper picks the plan, and the plan sets your rate
With one price per plan, your effective rate on Alma is a weighted average of the plans your shoppers choose. Take 2 million euro of Alma volume through Stripe at an average order of 300 euro, about 6,667 orders. With 40% of the volume in 2 instalments, 40% in 3 and 20% in 4, the weighted rate is 4.53%, so the cost is 90,600 euro plus 2,000 euro in fixed fees, 92,600 euro a year.
If 4 instalments is not shown and those shoppers pay in 3 instalments instead, the weighted rate falls to 4.26% and the cost to 87,200 euro, about 5,400 euro a year less. That assumes every 4 instalment shopper still buys. Whether that holds is measurable: compare conversion and order value for comparable traffic with and without the longest plan shown, and decide on the figures. Stripe states that cart ranges and the geographic availability of the plans are determined by Alma, so check which plans your route lets you control before you plan on it.
Contract
The rate rises automatically on American Express and business cards
Alma's pricing page states, as an exception, that an automatic increase in rates applies when the buyer uses an American Express card or a business card. The page does not print the size of that increase. The same page states that rates may be adjusted according to the risk identified.
Both clauses move your price after signature, on criteria you do not control. Put in writing how large the increase on American Express and business cards is, how a business card is identified, what triggers a risk adjustment, and how much notice you receive before an adjusted rate applies.
The same product is a payment facility in one country and credit in another
Alma states that in Belgium payment in 2 and 3 instalments is a payment facility, while payment in 4 instalments is credit. Payment in 5 to 12 instalments is available only to merchants that already offer payment in 2, 3 or 4 instalments, through a waiting list. Alma also offers sharing part of the fee with the shopper on payment in 2 instalments and payment later, and states that this is subject to regulatory constraints.
Directive (EU) 2023/2225 applies from 20 November 2026 and brings more short-term deferred payment within consumer credit rules. Your provider carries the licence; the effect reaches you through acceptance and through what the shopper may be charged. Ask Alma in writing which plans and fee arrangements it will offer in each of your markets from that date.
Which payment providers support Alma
In the index, Adyen, Checkout.com, Lyra, Mollie, Pay. and Stripe offer Alma to merchants established in Europe. Lyra and Pay. charge their own fee, with the cost of Alma itself on top. You can also contract Alma directly.
The questions to put to each are the same: which plans are shown and who decides, the rate per plan, how American Express and business cards are priced, how disputes are decided on that route, and when the payout arrives.

Reviewing what Alma costs you
What you pay for Alma is set in your agreement, with Alma or with your PSP, not by a scheme. Start by establishing whether you are overpaying your PSP, and if Alma carries a material share of your French or Belgian volume, price each plan on your own instalment mix before you renew.
