Accepting Atome as a merchant

Atome is a buy now, pay later provider used by shoppers in Singapore and Malaysia. In Singapore it is operated by Apaylater Financials Pte. Ltd., which is licensed as a Major Payment Institution under the Payment Services Act 2019; Atome states that the buy now, pay later scheme itself is not regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The shopper splits a purchase into three interest-free payments, or takes longer for a small fee at participating brands. For a European merchant selling into these two markets, Atome sets rules that sit in your checkout and your order flow: which items may be paid with it, when the payment is captured, and how large a basket a shopper can pay.

How to accept Atome as a merchant

For a business established in Europe the route in the index is Adyen, which offers Atome for shoppers in Singapore and Malaysia. The shopper is redirected from your checkout to Atome and returns once the payment is approved. Adyen also supports Atome in payment links created through its Pay by Link API.

Atome also contracts merchants itself. Its business page states that it supports major e-commerce platforms and payment gateways and will help integrate Atome on a website or in physical stores. HitPay offers Atome to merchants established in Singapore.

Model

Atome takes the credit decision and the first instalment at authorisation

Adyen documents that Atome runs risk checks before it approves a payment, that the shopper pays in three instalments, and that the shopper is charged the first instalment during authorisation. The remaining instalments are between the shopper and Atome. Atome's own pages describe the three payments as interest-free.

The payment does not run on a card rail on your side, so interchange and scheme fees do not apply to it. Adyen lists chargebacks as not supported and supports full, partial and multiple partial refunds. Recurring payments are not supported, so Atome is a method for one-off orders, not for subscriptions.

Where Atome is used and sold

Atome works online and in store in both markets. Its Singapore site lists stores by category, among them fashion, beauty, electronics, travel and an in-store category, and names brands such as Sephora, ZALORA, Secretlab and SHEIN. Its Malaysian site, in Malay, offers the same three interest-free payments online or in store.

Shoppers pay in their own currency: Singapore dollars or ringgit. In Malaysia Atome also offers the Atome Card, issued in partnership with Fass Payment Solutions Sdn Bhd, a licensed issuer of e-money and Visa prepaid cards. A payment with that card reaches you as a Visa card payment, not as an Atome payment.

Pricing

Atome publishes no merchant rate; Adyen prints 0.11 euro plus 5%

Atome does not publish what it charges merchants. PSPs do. Adyen prints 0.11 euro plus 5% for Atome for merchants in the European Union and Norway, and 0.11 pound plus 5% for the United Kingdom, the 0.11 being Adyen's processing fee. HitPay prints 5.50% online and in person for merchants established in Singapore.

On a 120 euro order Adyen's published rate comes to 6.11 euro. On 1 million euro of Atome volume at that average order, about 8,333 orders, the published rate comes to about 50,900 euro a year.

These are published list prices and the example is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay. The rate is only half the sum: the other half is which of those orders Atome brings that another method would not have.

Basket

Your checkout has to switch Atome off per item

Adyen states that Atome is unavailable for portable electronics, such as phones, laptops and speakers, and that the merchant's checkout must contain business logic that disables Atome for that category. The rule sits with you, not with Atome's approval screen.

One payment covers the whole basket, so one portable speaker in an order of clothing is enough to take Atome out of that order. Tag the excluded categories in your product data, hide Atome for any basket that contains one, and show it again when the item is removed. Atome also has a floor: Adyen lists a minimum of 1.50 Singapore dollars and 10 ringgit.

Capture

Agree in writing what happens to the fee when an order is cancelled before dispatch

Adyen documents that Atome payments are captured automatically after authorisation, and that separate captures, partial captures and multiple partial captures are not supported. You cannot hold the payment until the goods leave the warehouse, and you cannot capture only the part that ships.

So every out-of-stock line and every cancellation before dispatch becomes a refund of a captured payment. Take the 8,333 orders above and 3% cancelled before dispatch: 250 refunds of 120 euro each, 30,000 euro returned. If the fee of 6.11 euro is kept on each of those, that is about 1,530 euro a year paid on orders that never shipped. HitPay states that the original transaction fees are non-refundable. Put in your contract whether the fee is returned on a full refund, and how a partial refund for an unshipped line is priced.

The shopper's card sets the ceiling of the order

Adyen prints different maximums by card type. In Singapore an Atome payment can be up to 1,000 Singapore dollars when the shopper pays with a debit card and up to 3,000 Singapore dollars with a credit card. In Malaysia the maximums are 1,500 ringgit and 5,000 ringgit. Atome's Singapore code of practice adds that a credit limit above 2,000 Singapore dollars requires an additional credit assessment.

The maximum follows the shopper's card, not your basket, so a basket of 1,500 Singapore dollars is within the limit for one shopper and above it for the next. For higher-value ranges, keep a card or another method visible beside Atome, and measure Atome's authorisation rate by basket size rather than as one figure.

Which payment providers support Atome

In the index, Adyen and HitPay offer Atome. Adyen serves merchants established in Europe; HitPay offers it to merchants established in Singapore. Atome also contracts merchants itself.

The questions to put to each are the same: the quoted rate against Adyen's published 0.11 euro plus 5%, whether the fee is returned on a refund before dispatch, the settlement currency for Singapore dollar and ringgit payments, and the maximums that apply per card type.

Reviewing what Atome costs you

What you pay for Atome is set in your agreement with your PSP, not by a scheme. Start by establishing whether you are overpaying your PSP, and where Atome carries a material share of your Singapore or Malaysia volume, set its quoted rate and its refund terms against your cancellation figures before you renew.
