Accepting ACH Direct Debit as a merchant
ACH Direct Debit is a debit from a US bank account over the ACH Network, which Nacha describes as a payment system that reaches all US bank and credit union accounts. The merchant collects the shopper's authorisation and then pulls the amount; no card scheme sits in the chain. For a merchant established in Europe it is the way to collect from customers in the United States without a card, and Stripe describes it as popular for businesses with large or recurring transactions. The interesting part is not the low percentage. It is that a payment that has settled in your account can still be returned weeks later, and that the fee lines around the percentage decide the price for a European merchant.
Published prices for ACH Direct DebitPer provider, country and channel, further down this pageGo to the pricesHow to accept ACH Direct Debit as a merchant
You accept ACH Direct Debit through a PSP that originates the debits for you. Stripe lists businesses in the EU countries, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom among those that can accept it with settlement in local currency, for customers in the US paying in US dollars. Novalnet offers it as well and lists US dollars as both processing and settlement currency.
Three things differ from a card checkout. The customer has to authorise the debit terms, the bank account has to be verified, and where the merchant of record is outside the US, Stripe requires the account holder's complete address in the billing details. A European merchant does not need a US entity on that route, but it does need a checkout that collects those fields.
Rails
ACH is a batched bank debit, confirmed days after checkout
Nacha develops and administers the Nacha Operating Rules for ACH payments, and the Federal Reserve's FedACH is one of the services that exchange the batches between banks. There is no issuer authorisation at checkout, no 3DS step and no interchange. The merchant's side sends the debit, and the customer's bank either pays it or returns it.
That makes ACH Direct Debit a delayed notification method. Stripe states that it can take up to four business days to learn whether a payment succeeded or failed, and standard settlement is four business days from payment creation; two-day settlement is offered only to eligible US users. Shipping on order confirmation means shipping before you know the debit has been paid.
Nacha requires originators of WEB debits to run a commercially reasonable fraudulent transaction detection system, and since 19 March 2021 account validation is explicitly part of it for the first use of an account number. In practice the customer either signs in to their bank in the checkout or verifies with microdeposits, for which Stripe allows ten days.
Where ACH Direct Debit is used, and for what
The customer side is the United States only: a US bank account, payment in US dollars. Stripe sets a minimum of 0.50 dollar per payment. For a European merchant that makes ACH Direct Debit a method for one market, offered next to cards to US customers, not a method to show in every checkout.
The order profile matters more than the country. ACH Direct Debit is reusable once the mandate is in place, which suits subscriptions, invoices and high-value orders where a card fee is large in euros. For a one-off 40 euro order to a first-time US customer, the verification step and the wait for confirmation weigh more than the fee saved.
Pricing
The percentage is low; the surcharges decide the price
ACH has no owner that publishes a merchant price, so the price is whatever your PSP prints and quotes. Stripe publishes, for merchants in the euro countries other than Bulgaria, 0.80% per transaction with a cap of 5.00 euro, plus 1.50% for international transactions, plus 2% if currency conversion is required, 1.25 euro per instant bank account validation, 15.00 euro per disputed payment and 4.00 euro per failed payment. The page does not say whether the cap covers the two surcharges. Novalnet publishes 0.85% plus 0.24 euro, with an account package of 99 euro set-up and 25 euro a month. For merchants established in the US, Mollie publishes through GoCardless 0.50% plus 0.05 dollar, capped at 5 dollars.
On a 1,000 euro order, Stripe's 0.80% would be 8.00 euro and the cap brings it to 5.00 euro. If the international surcharge and the conversion fee both apply and sit outside the cap, they add 15.00 and 20.00 euro, and the order costs 40.00 euro. On an 80 euro order the same lines come to 0.64, 1.20 and 1.60 euro, 3.44 euro in all. Novalnet's published rate on the same two orders is 8.74 and 0.92 euro, before the monthly package.
These are published list prices and the example is illustrative; your quoted rate decides what you actually pay. What it shows is where the money sits: on a European merchant's US volume the cap can be worth 3.00 euro while the surcharges are worth 35.00 euro. Ask your PSP in writing whether the international surcharge applies to a US account debited by your entity, whether the cap covers it, and whether you can settle in US dollars.
Finality
Settled is not final: the 60-day window on consumer accounts
Stripe states that a customer can generally dispute an ACH Direct Debit through their bank for up to 60 calendar days after a debit on a personal account, and up to two business days for a business account. Disputes within those windows are final and cannot be contested through the ACH network. The money has reached your balance long before the window closes.
That turns the window into an amount. On 2 million euro a year of ACH volume from personal accounts, 60 calendar days covers about 329,000 euro of settled payments that can still be returned at any moment. On the same volume from business accounts, two business days covers about 16,000 euro, taking 250 business days a year. The method behaves differently for a B2B seller and a consumer brand, and the difference is the size of the open position, not the fee.
Mandate
The authorisation is your only evidence, so agree who holds it
Every ACH debit rests on the customer's authorisation. Stripe records the mandate with the date, the method of acceptance and, online, the IP address, user agent and timestamp when you use its hosted checkout, and answers a bank's request for proof of authorisation itself. If you build your own payment form, displaying the mandate text and keeping the evidence is your job, and Stripe states that Nacha rules require each customer to receive a copy of the mandate.
A dispute also ends the mandate: Stripe states that a disputed payment invalidates it, and a second dispute on a later payment blocks the bank account. Agree in writing who stores the authorisation and for how long, who sends the mandate confirmation, who answers a proof request and within what deadline, and how recurring customers are notified at least seven calendar days before the timing of their debits changes.
Refunds arrive as a new credit, and only in full on Stripe
Stripe processes an ACH refund as a separate credit to the customer's bank account, never as a reversal, within 180 days of the payment and in up to three business days. Its documentation lists full refunds as supported and partial refunds as not supported. A merchant that takes back one item from a three-item order needs another way to return part of the money.
There is a second operational risk. Stripe warns that a refund does not stop a dispute, so a customer who asks for money back and also contacts their bank can be credited twice, while the dispute fee is not refunded. Tell the customer when a refund is on its way, and reconcile refunds against open disputes before you pay out a second time.
Which payment providers support ACH Direct Debit
In the index, Mollie, Novalnet and Stripe offer ACH Direct Debit. Mollie's published price comes from GoCardless, which Mollie acquired on 1 September 2026, and applies to merchants established in the US.
The questions to put to each are the same: which surcharges apply to your entity and whether a cap covers them, the settlement currency, what a failed payment and a dispute cost, how account validation is done and priced, whether partial refunds are possible, and who keeps the proof of authorisation.
