Staples Solutions
Headquartered in Amsterdam, Staples Solutions is a leading provider of workplace products, services and solutions to businesses across Europe. It runs wholly-owned operations in 10 countries, covers 38 countries across EMEA through its Global Alliance Partners, and offers solutions in 54 countries worldwide.
The challenge
Staples set out to implement a new pan-European payment solution as a critical part of a broader digital transformation, closely tied to the replatforming of its ecommerce platform. The goal was to modernise and streamline payment operations across multiple European markets at once, with a seamless checkout experience at the front and robust financial integration at the back. A project of that scope demands senior payment capacity inside the team, not advice from the sidelines.
The approach
This was an implementation engagement. EcomStream provided hands-on senior payment capacity within an international, multidisciplinary team of product owners, software developers, UX designers, IT architects and risk managers, supporting the rollout of the new PSP end to end, from front-end integration with the ecommerce platform to back-end connectivity with finance and reconciliation systems.
The value was in translation and coordination. EcomStream defined the integration requirements, made sure the solution was properly tested and aligned with the replatforming effort, and acted as the bridge between business and technology, turning business needs into technical requirements the architects and developers could build against. Particular attention went to risk management and compliance, ensuring the solution met European regulatory standards and Staples’ internal security protocols.
The outcome
Staples came out with a lean, scalable and future-proof pan-European payment solution, fully integrated into its financial systems and aligned with its ecommerce platform. The setup supports multiple payment methods across countries, provides advanced reporting and reconciliation, and gives the business improved financial transparency and the flexibility to scale. It stands as a clear example of how senior payment capacity inside a cross-functional team drives a successful digital transformation.
“The Staples eCommerce team, for which I was responsible, consulted Ramon Helwegen in 2020 and 2021 for the contracting and set-up of a payment solution based on Adyen for the Staples Europe business. Thanks to his help and collaboration we managed to make it work and complete the eCommerce consumer and customer journeys.”
